The AFRL Discovery Lab leverages OpenSimulator features for managing the activities of its own research organization, and has developed a collection of virtual research institutes that cover a wide spectrum of technologies. These institutes serve a scalable platform for acquiring, training, and maintaining a research staff with potentially hundreds of members, and even as a medium for the research itself. Furthermore, the AFRL Discovery Lab uses OpenSimulator to engage the community through large and small virtual conferences. These conferences utilize OpenSimulator’s voice and audio broadcast services to give presentations and virtual demos to hundreds of conference participants in specially designed virtual regions.
